I know that most of you know what I think about the 'beautiful game', ha, beautiful game, that is funny, but with my experiences over the last few weeks I think I need to reinterate my stance.
For the CBC I have been going to what is called the WCP World Cup of Soccer. It is being held here in Regina and ends this weekend. Basically what it is is a bunch of soccer players look at their last names and decide what ethnic origin it sounds like, start a team, name it after the country you think you have ancestors there, and then play against other teams that have designed themselves in the same manner.
Needless to say there is no US team. There are US players, but not a US team. Hmmmmm, I wonder why? Maybe because it sucks? Let me break down what I have experienced over the past few weeks. Get ready for some generalizations. Fast and furious.
First, I have figured out that all soccer fans like crappy music. All I hear is that lousy club music where every song sounds the same. Oh and don't get me started on that 'Ole, ole, ole" song. Why is that the universal song for soccer? I will never guess. I HATE THAT SONG. Plus the DJ at this tournament, yes you heard me right they have a DJ, likes to play a lot of songs that are covers. You know, a bad DJ takes a good song, like U2 With or Without You and ramps it up to aroun d 250 beats per minute, gets some singer, and I use that term loosely, puts a crappy dance beat behind it and viloa. One great song ruined. Plus said DJ likes to use the microphone too much and talk about, absolutely nothing. Of course he has the prerequisite DJ voice. You know the one, the one that sounds like he is on the crazy morning zoo crew on your local radio station. I hate DJ voice. It is like fingernails on the chalkboard, except the fingernails on the chalkboard does not want to make you vomit.
Last week he came over and put the mic in my face thinking he was going to be clever as he said 'talking to the CBC cameraman'. He asked me who I thought would win the tournament. Of course I was ready for him and said 'USA'. He looked at me with the 'I never even finished thrid grade' look and then walked away. Nice. DJ voice jerk.
Now lets talk about the atmosphere. If you can get around all the noise the fans make. Now, I have been to sporting events where you are supposed to make noise to make sure the other team knows you are there, but this is different. I saw Chile play France and the Chile fans never stopped singing. At one point I was positive they were singing the song 'Pop Goes the World' by the Canadian sensation Men Without Hats. Seroiusly, I am not kidding. Of course MWOH sang it better. Noisy, noisy, noisy. If you are gonna make noise at least be constructive like call the goalie a loser or tell him his mom just called and she said he sucks. That is the kind of noise we need. Not Ole, ole, ole, ole. Stop it for the love of god.
Speaking of atmosphere, the air in there was terrible. No, the were'nt playing in an old barn or a sulfer plant. What I am getting at is that every dude (as well as the chicks) who was there, besides wearing some kind of track pants and a 'Al Pacino' leather jacket, bathed in cologne. It is like someone took all the cologne bottles in the world and dumped them in this soccer pitch. That reminds me what the hell is a pitch anyway? Looks like a good football field wasted. Anyway, I think every Axe scent was represented as well as Calvin Klein, Chanel, and probably some Old Spice. Terrrrible. I was glad that it did not stick to me because that is the last thing I need is Donna smelling on me is some chicks purfume, or worse than that, some dudes cologne.
Now lets get to the soccer. I am, as you know not a fan. Mainly because when you watch it on TV you have to watch for around a month before you see a goal scored. Why is the goal is sooooooo big but it is so hard for those guys to put it in there? Why? It is enormous. Now I know some wise ass is going to say to me "Well if you think it is so easy why don't you try it?" Well because I have no desire to chase the ball for 90 minutes. OR watch some other dudes chase the ball.
Someone at work said that there really is no difference between soccer and hockey other than the ice and I strongly disagree. In hockey you have guys with sticks so you get big hits, fights, swearing, and overall general manly rough stuff. You know good family entertainment. None of that in soccer. There is no honor in soccer. You run back and forth for over an hour and basically have nothing to show for it. Some guy was armchair coaching from near the cameras and he yelled "you guys are just chasing the ball'. Uh, yeah, that is what soccer is. Chase the ball. It is a great sport, errr activity, for kids because they chase the ball for an hour and then they go to bed real good sleep solid all night.
I have never said that soccer players are not athletes. They are incredible athletes. They chase the ball around for 90 minutes. You are gonna get in great shape doing that. What about all the dives these guys take. Don't get me started on that. I watched this chick get kicked in the shin the other night. She went down like she just got shot by 50 cent. Writhing and crying. It was embarassing. The ref, or whatever the hell they are called in soccer, waited for a minute then gave her the call. The minute she got the call she jumped up, waved to the crowd, and said "I'm all right!". I am not lying. The crowd laughed and cheered for her.
Let me get this straight, she takes an obvious dive, gets up and tells us all she just took a dive, and it is okay? Not in my world it's not. She should have been kicked out of the game as well as someone should go to her house and kick her dog. No honor. The crowd cheered. Can you believe that? No wonder soccer players take dives so often if the crowd likes it. Here is something you soccer players can do to win over the crowd....SCORE A FREAKING GOAL THIS CENTURY!!!
So needless to say I am not excited about having to go again this week, every night, two games a night. Man, talk about nap time. There was a game the other night between two womens teams. They each scored on their first trip up the field. I immediately wanted to call someone and tell them that a miracle happened. I was thinking that at this pace they may score more goals than have been scored at all soccer games in the last five years (which I estimate to be around 10). But, alas, I was wrong. No one score for the next 55 minutes. Ended in a tie I think. I was asleep. Man that sucked.
So if you read in the paper about a camera guy going crazy and shooting up a soccer game in Canada, you know it was me. Oh, and you can call all the TV stations and do a few "He was always a very quiet person. Kept to himself mostly." interviews. You know, the way these guys take dives, I would not even need a real gun, all I would have to do is say BANG real loud and they would all go down faster than Paris Hilton when there is a camera in the room.
Now I got stuff to do. GET BACK TO WORK!!!

Favre goes on Letterman, did not sign papers...
Okay, so Favre was on Letterman last night. Was anything new shed on the "is he, or isn't he retired" debate? Nope, I think it will even get worse now. I am beginning to think he is enjoying all this. Just toying with my emotions like I am some old girlfriend that he has tossed aside. Making me think he is coming back, but just at the last second says no, but then says 'wanna go see a movie?". Quit or don't quit, stop screwing with me.

I am NHL Perfection. I completely rule...
Oh and also I enjoy the fact that the guy that Oilerfan ran out of town, Joffrey Lupul, scored the OT, GAME SEVEN, winner to send his new team, the Philadelphia Flyers, to the second round. Sweet vengence is his. How does that taste Oilerfan? Pretty bitter I bet.
So you say, "How do you follow up perfection there Big Show?". Well I will tell ya, just keep your panties on.
Here are my predictions for the second round of the NHL Playoffs... Call your bookie...
Montreal Canadiens (1) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (6)
Okay I hate the fact that the idiot Montreal fans burned cop cars and broke windows. I don't want to pick them, I don't, but, I think they are just too strong to lose to the Flyers. But, hell, screw the fans of Montreal, but, man this is tough. I hate to do it but Montreal will win this series. The Montreal fans will get theirs in the next round courtesy of Sid the Kid and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Pittsburgh Penguins (2) vs. New York Rangers (5)
I like Sid the Kid and again, Ty Conklin is on this team. The quest to get a former Gambler's name on the Cup continues. Pittsburgh wins in 6. Sorry hauser. The Rangers will make it interesting though.
Detroit Dead Wings (1) vs. Colorado Avalanche (6)
We all know how I feel about the Wings. Preacher Man and Doroshenko are Wings fans. Screw the Wings. This is a heated rivalry between these teams and there will be blood. Colorado will give the Wings the Finger and win in seven. In this case the Wings suck and therefore so do Trev and Preacher. Sorry boys.
San Jose Sharks (2) vs. DalASS Stars (5)
Hate DallASS. JR plays for San Jose and I love JR. So therefore we have San Jose in seven. I don't know anybody who is a fan for either of these teams.
Good luck with your picks. Now I have to get back to work so do you.
Doroshenko will be laying down his podcast soon so watch for that also. Oh and Evan Klippenstein, of the CBC Edmonton Klippers, sent me this story to further discuss how much it sucks to shoot from a very small air plane. Evan is also one of the smallest shooters I know so that says alot. Congrats to you and Mugsy on your second Klipper to enter the world. Lets hope this kid is a better goaler than you. Oh, come on, you are a tremedous goaler Evan, as far as you know (thanks Nordic Man for that one). ..Take it away Evan...
Hey fellow CBC'er,
I just read your blog (missed the last few posts) and the story of shooting from a plane. Classic! The mental picture you painted made me howel and reminded me of the many uncomfortable time I've had to shoot from a plane. Not that my size is an issue, just the turbulance and keyhole size windows available to shoot from. Anyways, I'd just like to share a very recent story of how everything can go right on an ariel shoot that results in the competition using my footage instead of theirs and the National eating it up.
A few weeks ago a plane crashes near Wainwright killing all 5 people on board, tragically family and coworkers of a flight that crashed near Golden BC in November killing 3. Huge story. I'm told to go to the muni-airport where a helicopter will pick me up and we have to find the crash site because at this point no-one knows where the exact location is. It's 3pm. The chopper is a C2, used to fight forest fires, and the pilot is all business. He take 15 minutes to empty all unnessecary seats and strap me and my camera into a harness and explain how the giant door opens in midflight. All I'm thinking is great, if we somehow survive a crash and the chopper is on fire, I can't run away. It takes us an hour to get to Wainwright and the weather has turned into blizzard like conditions. A small single engine Cesna carrying the Journal photog and Global camera guy are in touch with us as we both are searching for the crash sight.
It's in a snowy tree filled valley 12 kms northeast of town is all we know. After much circling and incredibly low flying we spot rescue vehicle lights flashing and voila, the wreckage. Global is circling a mile above us. My pilot is awesome. I'm on the left side of the chopper with the door swung open, sitting on the edge of the seat, both feet dangling outside. The pilot was on the right side but knew exactly what I needed to see from the left. He hovered low enough that we were whipping snow into rescue workers faces (not for long, we felt bad), he followed a snowmobile pulling a body up the hill to a staging area...a perfect tracking shot, and circled the big blue tarp where the other bodies were covered. It was very eerie hovering above the scene of such tragedy but ended up with 20 minutes of excellent tape.
We landed at the Wainwright airport at 5pm where are Sat. truck was waiting to feed it across the country. Global used their crappy shots from the plane circling way above us for their 6pm news but by 11 they were using ours. I let my boss know that this chopper pilot is the only way to do these shoots from now on; alot more expensive than a plane, but so worth it.
Hope all is well with you and your girls. Our second is due Sept. 1st and our latest attempt to fiigure out which set of genitalia it has was inconclusive.
Did you hear, the Score is laying off the shooters and going with VJ's? They'll never learn.
Take care,
Evan
I did see your footage as well as edit some for the show. Nice work homey. I think I can say I taught that boy everything I know. Which is not much. The most important thing I taught him is never put ANYTHING on top of your rig. I agree that helicopters are the only way to go.
Yup the Score will never learn. I also think that is the first time the word Genitalia has been used on TundraTalk. Sweeet.

The Nordic Podcast is on the air...
So how did he do? Well you will just have to CLICK HERE and listen for yourself. Or if you want to click the link at the top you can do that also. What was discussed? Well we spoke on a few things. The most important topics were Lederhosen, Knockwurst, and Dee Snider. That's right, The
Next up on the hot seat will be our first in person interview, Trev Doroshenko, of the Regina Doroshenkos. We will see if he can overcome the fact that he did not send in an application to be in. Who knows, maybe he will live the dream.
Okay, now I have to go to work and cover the worst thing ever. Soccer. I hate soccer. It is soooo not a sport. Maybe if I am lucky someone will score a goal. Probably not though.
Now, GET BACK TO WORK!!!

Ric Flair Shuts it down....finally....
It's been a bit of a rough year for me. Not in the work sucks, life sucks kind of way, but in the all my favorite athletes shut it down kind of way. Just a little over a week ago on a monday night the wrestling, or wrasslin', world paid tribute to one of the all time greats. Now I know some of you are now saying to me, "Chris, how would you know, you retired from watching wrestling." Which you would be correct. I did not see it live, a friend at the CBC taped it and I watched it posthumously. Big word.
Apparently Ric over the past month has had a story line where Vince McMahon told him if he loses he has to quit. So apparently he has been winning for a month or two. I did see a match on a Monday where he wrestled Vince McMahon. It was, and I am sad to say it, the worst match I have ever seen Ric wrestle. It culminated at Wrestlemania where he wrestled Shawn Michaels. To whom he lost. Well on Monday night Raw the wrestling world bid farewell to the Man. It was quite a show.
Now I will tell you there were no man tears shed, because we all know that this was a 'Wrasslin'' retirement so he could be back in the ring next week. But I will tell you that it was pretty elaborate goodbye. Have a look courtesy of YouTube...
Speaking of entertaining, I have been watching this guy for aroun
Now living in North Dakota, you don't usually get to see the world champ that often. In fact, never. I am not sure that Ric Flair, as NWA world champ ever made it through North Dakota. I wanted to see Ric wrestle so bad. In fact in 1996 I drove from Green Bay to Fargo to watch a WCW Thunder taping just on the chance that Ric Flair would wrestle. I was denied. It took until I went to Wrestlemania 19 in Seattle to finally see Ric perform. And even then he did not wrestle.
In Edmonton a year or so later Ric came back to town and it was awesome, but he still did not wrestle. Maybe that is good, because later in his life his skills were lacking. Still when he did his nose dive into the mat, it just got better like a fine wine. That is the thing about Ric Flair, he was always entertaining. Always. There were only a few ring entrance songs that you knew when you heard it there was a beatdown coming. The Freebirds, the Road Warriors and Ironman, Roddy Piper and the pipes, and Ric Flair with the theme from 2001. Everything about Ric was entertaining. His robes were second to none. I think he may have been the last one to wear a robe to the ring. Those things were awesome.
There is a story that I am unsure if it is true, but I hear that Steve Schoenrock, of the Minot Schoenrocks, in college had an old robe of his moms that resembled one of Rics ring robes. Apparently he wore it every saturday morning. It is also unconfirmed that he refused to eat breakfast until Tony Mutzenberger would give him a ring introduction. That is the stuff of legends.
He is the king of the catch phrases. The only other dude who is even close is the Rock. I still to this day use the Whooooooo! at all times. I have used many of his catch phrases much to the chagrin of Donna. ' In order to be the man, you have to beat that man, and right now I am that man.' is one of the all time greats. The airport story is great, and then there is the '60 minute man.' His stuff will be forever be in my dialouge. I guess it is plagerism but I don't care.
So to wrap this one up the world has lost two great ones this year. Number Four, and the leader of the Four Horsemen.
Get ready for the Podcast with the Nordic Man.

Nordic Man fires a pre Podcast volley accross the bow...
I have been listening to your podcasts and here is my response to those that think I did not apply or only let my wife email.
OK. Just to let you know. I did reply to Chris' call for applicants. My wife just happened to put her 2 cents in as well to show her support for me being in the posse.
That is the one the email Chris posted. Not my fault.
These are my short list as to why I belong!
1) I was in the posse when we gathered to play poker on a weekly basis.
2) My favorite pastime is fighting fires.
3) I am able to do my "DAY" job in my underwear.
4) I am your best hookup for all things GRB/WI.
5) My kids ROCK!
6) As for telling you the way it is? Go ahead and ask. But you better be ready for the Gods honest truth.
7) And if you don't love the USA and all the ideals it stands for? Kiss my ASS! (note: that I did not specify a party. It is the Ideals that we stand for. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happyness)

NEXT: Mike Chaussee shows up...
Okay, in our 12 part series of posdcasts, designed to form me a posse, Mike Chaussee, of the Bismarck Chaussees, sits in and makes his play to become a, well um, PLAYA. Nice, I truly am a wordsmith.
Anyway, Mike came prepared. He had his man laws studied, he knew his Packer stats, and he said pretty much the right things. He even explained why he hates man tears.
I am not sure what to do about you guys so far. No major smak running. Mike ran not one bit of smak. Well, except at viqueen fans. They deserve every bit of smak they get. Oh, and Mike does a great job on explaining why the suck and why it is soooooo much fun to hate the queens.
Anyway, CLICK HERE listen to Mike on TundraTalk or just click the link up on the right.
Next up on the list is the Nordic Man. Get ready big man, get ready.
Oh, and just in case you noticed that I have not commented on the retirement of the greatest wrestler of all times, Ric Flair, oh I have not ignored it, I am just compliling my thoughts. I will address this next week. Man Number 4 AND the Nature Boy retire in the same year. Big losses for professional sport. Big losses.
Okay, I gots things to do so why don't all of you GET BACK TO WORK!!!!

Impromptu flight, NHL Playoffs, and Marty on Leno...
Okay, yesterday I had the, ahem, priviledge, to go for a flight to get some video of a train crash. Now, I don't generally like to fly but I won't usually try to get out of it. It is just that these flights, unless you are in a helicopter are not fun. In fact, back in Green Bay once, I was sent over to Austin Straubel to jump on a plane to get vid of a plane crash (usually two every year around the EAA) and before I could even get out of the NBC mobile commisary the pilot was telling me to go back and get someone smaller because, and I quote, "There ain't no way in hell you are gettin' in my plane."
So you can imagine my caution when I get the call to head over to Regina Flying Club to jump on a plane. I asked him how big the plane was and the assignment editor told me that a guy from Global TV is also going so it will be plenty big. Okay, no prob. Well I get over to the airport and I scan the runway and I don't see anything bigger than a Cessna. Not pleased.
I ask the guy inside which plane we are going on and he points me to this three seater job right in front of the window. Great, this is going to suck. Now if you have ever been in one of these planes you know that the wind pushes them around like an anorexic in a wind storm. So you need to have a bit of a strong stomach. Not only do I have that to contend with but I have to shoot video also. Not conducive to the lunch I just finished eating.
So I am running all kinds of scenarios through my head on how I can get out of this. So I ask him how much the assignment editor told him I weighed. The pilot said that David told him that I weighed 220. Well, yes I did weigh 220, BACK IN HIGH SCHOOL. That's right 1986 was the last time I weighed 220. Needless to say I informed him that I weighed considerably more than that and he then assured me that we were still okay for the flight. Damn.
He tells me to get in the front, which I do and I promtly break the seat. It now reclines a bit more than it should. The pilot also tells me not to bump the controls, which are conviently about an inch from my feet and my knees. Nice. Every time he tried to turn right he hit my knee. I am sooo dead.
Then he turned the thing on. That is when I started to think that this was my last assignment. This thing rattled and shook like Lindsay Lohan looking for her next fix. I was thinking that I needed to call and tell Donna goodbye and to make sure that she gives my signed Brett Favre football to the right person. I kept thinking about that old Canadian show called ENG where they were traveling on a plane up in the bush and the plane crashed and a reporter died along with a producer. All I knew was that I did not want to go out like this.
He got the bad boy off the ground and I immediately got into take a nap mode. When in doubt, sleep. I just did not want to be that guy who pukes on a plane. I could only imagine what that would be like in such a small shitty plane. It took about 40 minutes to get to the train derailment. After we got there the pilot was told that we had to stay up wind of the toxic chemicals and at about 5500 feet. Great, nice way to make pictures. So as you can see in the picture I was sitting on the right side of the plane. The crash was on the to the left of the pilot. We swung around so it was out the right sid of the plane and that left me with a huge ass camera and no way to see what I am shooting as the viewfinder is on the left of the camera.
We got back in one piece and my video was fine. No puking for me, but man did I go straight for the junk food when we hit the ground. I needed something to make me feel good. Moral of the story, don't fly in a plane that you are bigger than and don't zoom in whilst you are in the air shooting something on the ground.
Okay, now on to my predictions for the NHL Playoffs. Whooooooo, I love this time of the year. I know Robby DuPuis of the Minneapple DuPuis used to just buy cable once a year during the playoffs. I am going to make this short and sweet because I need to get a call into Mike Chaussee so I can put him on TundraTalk the Podcast.
EASTERN CONFERENCE
(1)Montreal vs Boston(8) - Okay not fond of either of these teams so I will just pick by the ranking and go with the Canadiens.
(2)Pittsburgh vs Ottowa(7) - Now we all know that I always pick the team with a former Gambler on it. Ty Conklin plays for the Penguins so thus I pick the Penguins. I want to see a former Gamblers name on the Stanley Cup. Sorry Mitch.
(3)Washington vs Philly(6) - Again, not to concerned with this series but I do know that Washington has been hot lately and Philly has not. But I am going to go with Philly just because.
(4)New Jersey vs NY Rangers(5) - In the battle of New York I will take Hauser's team. Not fond of the Devils, they are evil.
WESTERN CONFERENCE
(1)Detroit Red Wings vs NashVegas(8) - Okay, we all know that I hate the Dead Wings and their crappy red jerseys, but I am thinking that they will deal Nashville a loss in the first round.
(2)San Jose vs the Godless Flames(7) - Screw the Flames. Sharks in 4.
(3) Minnesota vs the Colorado Avalanche (6) - We all know that the Avs will give the Wild the Finger. Jeff Fingers name on the Cup would be AWESOME. Avs in 6.
(4)Anaheim vs DallASS Stars(8) - Here is another series that I wish both teams would lose. I will go with DallASS because I do not like the Ducks. Pronger is an ass.
Okay there you have my first round predictions. Call your bookie and put all you have on Colorado.
Last but not least I will leave you with this video. I have been wanting to put this up for a while but have not had time. Here is Marty Frey on Leno being questioned by Arsenio's freakishly large hands.
Enjoy.

Min Dhariwal steps up to the plate...
Here it is the first of many TT with a podcast to go with it. Today I start my interrogation of the guys who are finalists to make my posse. Up first is a dude who I used to work with at A Channel.
He is also one of the dudes that made the final list without having to state his case. I guess we will find out if he passes the test.
Okay, here are the rules of the TundraTalk Podcasts. There will be twelve podcasts. All finalists will get pu to fifteen minutes. Believe it or not there will be a method to this madness. All finalists will get a multiple choice, a Bon Jovi Lyric, a movie quote, and the rapid fire segment. Not only that they will get a few minitues to smak the other participants and to make thier case as to why they should make the crew.
Well, without further ado, CLICK HERE and listen to Min on TundraTalk. Next up on the show will be another underdog, Mike Chaussee. Mike start studying, you are gonna need it.

Muldrew finally wakes up...
That is Sandy Muldrew, of the CBC Edmonton Muldrew's, up there in the picture. He is kind of a dolt, but a likeable dolt. That picture was taken during the Oilers Stanley Cup run. He somehow managed to weasle his way into the Pond in Anaheim for game 5. Loser. Anyway, why are we talking about this guy? He, sent me a note yesterday, about listening to a TT podcast for the first time. Nice, good friend huh? I have only done thirty or so of them. Welcome to the party loser. Did you bring anything to add to the discussion?
Hello Tundra Talk,
I listened to my first T.T. just to hear my interruption (I interrupted your 'fascinating' discussion to complain about the length of your discussion). Even though you referred to me as the 'cheap seats', I still was thrilled to be included in one of your famous inuit bog chats. You will be hearing from my lawyer......
Sandy
Thanks Sandy for cluing in on something we all figured out a long time ago. Oh and get ready for more of the best Podcast coming up. I have worked out most of my questions and am getting ready to start the "Series to end all Seriessss". That's right TundraTalk Entourage podcasts will begin soon. You better start Foilin' up for these.
