Happy New Beer!!!

Tom Preissing on Inside NHL from hamiltongbp on Vimeo.

Okay so it has been a bit since I have posted a TundraTalk so I have a few to get out this week. I am going to start with a couple of videos. The first one is of our good friend and TundraTalk vetran Tom Preissing. He was on the show Inside the NHL on HDNET. Not a big deal when he is on TV but he was pretty funny in this interview. He confessed that his favorite holiday is Flag Day and discusses his college thesis. The funniest part is he knew what font he printed it in. Oh and he does his Minnesota accent. Nice to see the mainstream media picking up on guys that we here at TundraTalk have always known were the goods.

Next we will show you some video that is a TundraTalk EXCLUSIVE. Yup, we here at the media conglomerate TT have and always will bring you exclusive stuff. Marty Frey, of the LA Frey's, sent me a DVD of the Sex Pistols doing their warm up for Leno. Great stuff. Johnny Rotten making fart noises into the mic, smarting off to the crowd in the room, and just being a punker. One thing I did notice watching the DVD was that the guitar in between takes was taken by a guitar tech and tuned. How un Punk Rock is that? He makes up for it by killing in the show performance. These guys are way cool. They re recorded Anarchy in the UK for Guitar Hero III. Which I am not a guitar hero, but I do okay. I managed to rock the Pistols on that game.

One thing, this video is for the TT Nation ONLY. Please don't load this up on YouTube or give it to someone who might. Marty would get his ass handed to him if it made it up on YouTube. Thank you.

CLICK HERE to watch the rehearsal. It is about 15 minutes long but well worth the time. It might take a bit to load in.

CLICK HERE to watch the performance. About 5 minutes of Rock n Roll history.

Okay, now later in the week I will share with you my trip to Billings Montana to purchase my new ride. Lots of interesting things happened and some interesting pics to go along with it.

Now GET BACK TO WORK!!!!

Finals picks and other things...

Elgin8446.jpg

Okay, the finals are ready to rock and I went o-fer in the last round on my picks. I feel like I won on the east side because as I said, I could go either way. In fact I had Ottowa picked then I picked Buffalo, then Ottowa, and then finally settled on Buffalo. I am happy that Tom Preissing will be playing in the final. Last two Stanley Cup Finals there have been three former Gamblers playing in them. Nice.

Mitch Davis, of the Regina Davis', sent me a link for a story that will make you want to root for the Senators also. CLICK HERE to read the story. I dare you not to cry. I dare you.

So without further ado, I will make my picks...

Ottowa Senators(4) vs Anaheim Ducks(2)

Well we all know how I feel about the Ducks. Plus since the Ducks have made it to the final, the Oilers get another first rounder in 2008 draft. That was part of the Chris Pronger trade. Which I might add, Kevin Lowe needs to think about. He can basically be credited with putting a dumb hockey team, that no one in California cares about, in the Stanley Cup Final. Not to mention that the Ducks are in the Oilers division. Congrats Kevin. You made another team in your division better. If it were me, I would have traded him to somewhere like Florida or Columbus. Teams that suck and will always suck. Make him pay for being a big baby. This is three years in a row that a team from the south has made it to the final. Teams that really should not even be in those markets. Bettman is a loser. Oh and thanks for waiting to start the final until Monday. Just so you can put your games on NBC. NBC also does not care about hockey because they dumped the sudden death OT game between Ottowa and Buffalo for the Preakness pre race show. NHL got bumped so NBC could show horses walking around in their barns. Nice. NBC and Bettman Sucks. Sorry Marty, I calls 'em as I sees 'em.

Anyway, I digress. I pick Ottowa to win this in 6. I really want to see a Gambler with his name on the cup. Plus how can you not root for this team after reading the story above?

NEXT: I got some more Trailer Park Boys videos for you to watch. First the TPB talk about their book. Ricky is hilarious in this one...

Second is a piece from the Rick Mercer show. Bubbles goes up in a fighter jet. Brilliant...

Have a good day and GET BACK TO WORK...

This American Life and Second round picks...

Okay so round one of the NHL playoffs is over and I was wrong on three of the eight series. The Thrashers, Wild, and Predators did not win but I was right on the rest. How will I do in round two? We will see.

First though I have to show you some video. I picked this off of the B-roll dot net site. A great site for all you photogs out there. Lots of good discussion on everything to do with cameras and cameraguy stuff. The clip is from a show called 'This American Life" that runs on Showtime. We do not get it up here so I cannot attest to it's goodness or badness. I hear that it is good though. This clip talks about kids in a playground pretending to be camera guys. Kinda funny. Kinda has some meaning to. Just an all around good clip. Have a look...

Got this note from Robyn Young, of the WRGZ Young's...

Hey Chris!

Greetings from Buffalo!

What’s your rant on our Buffalo Sabres?

Hope all is well.

Robyn Young

P.S. I’m going to law school this Fall.

Well Robyn, I will tell you what I think of the Sabres here shortly and all is well. Plus, going to law school? Great another lawyer in the TundraTalk Nation. I need all the protection I can get so good luck Robyn, I hope you kick major ass in Law School.

Well, on to the second round...

BUFFALO SABRES(1) vs NY RANGERS(6)

So you want to know what I think of the Sabres. Well, Robyn, here it is. I want them to win the cup. For several reasons. One, for the way they got screwed back in 2000 when Brett Hull DID NOT SCORE in OT and Bettman gave the cup away too fast before he looked at the instant replay to see that BRETT'S FRICKING SKATE WAS IN THE CREASE. So I think the Sabres are due. Second, I like Chris Drury a lot. Former Avalanche player is a great leader, a former Little League World Series champ, former rookie of the year, and the list goes on. Third, Ty Conklin is on this team. He is of course a former Green Bay Gambler, TundraTalk vetran, and a great guy. I would love to see a Gambler's name on the Cup. Plus, he got major league screwed by the Oilers last year and I would love for Ty to win the cup and come back to Edmonton with a cup ring on his middle finger and see him show it to everyone in Edmonton. I like Buffalo to embarass Hauser's Rangers. Just out class them on all levels. Buh Bye. Buffalo in six.

OTTOWA SENATORS(4) vs NEW JERSEY DEVILS(2)

Once again this is a team that has a former Gambler on it. Tom Preissing is on my playoff team and he is a good guy. Ottowa is Mitch Davis, of the Regina Davis's, team and they look ready to make the next step. Plus I hate the way the Devils play hockey. Slow, clog up the middle, wait for the other team to make a mistake. Brodeur showed some weakness in the last series so I think this one will go toward Ottowa. Ottowa in six.

DETROIT RED WINGS (1) vs SAN JOSE SHARKS(5)

Well, what do I do here. I have been to San Jose, never been to Detroit. Preacherman and Trev are big wings fans. The Avs hate the wings. I hate the wings. Screw the Wings. Wait, I like hot wings, I just want people to understand that. I hate the RED wings. I am happy that the Wings beat the Flames. The Flames did not deserve to be in the playoffs, but that is where it ends. I felt dirty cheering for the Wings in round one. Dirty. Sharks in 7.

ANAHEIM DUCKS (2) vs VANCOUVER CANUCKS(3)

I discussed in the last round why I did not like the Ducks. I will add to that. Last year during the playoffs with the Oilers, Conference Finals. There were whole sections of the rink that did not have any people sitting in the seats. There was a whole Luxury Box that was empty. Go ahead and look at the seats during the game. There will be tons of empty seats in the lower bowl. I guarantee it. The city of Anaheim does not care about this team, a good team, so they do not deserve to win. I hate that Bettman put teams in cities where they do not care about hockey. The people of Winnipeg are dying to have a team and would fill the arena every night, but NOOOOOOO Anaheim has a team. Screw Anaheim. Screw their stupid arena, screw their big d man, screw their half assed fans, screw them all. Vancouver in 7.

There you have it, my picks, not necessarily for you to run to Vegas and bet on because there is no science or math involved, just me and my ego.

Have a good day and get back to work!!!

Best time of the Year and Wisconsin Friends...

Robby DuPuis, of the Minneapolis DuPuis, sent me a note with the pic above...

Hey man, just wanted to share a couple photos with you. A buddy and I went to the Target Center on Saturday to catch your boy Spike Lee. He's on a promotional tour for his Katrina/ New Orleans documentary. He spoke for a while and then did Q&A on anything that was asked. It was pretty cool. He talked about getting started in the biz and how he blew up after the Jordan/ Mars commercials, about how disastrous our administration is and how badly they botched the hurricane relief (the U.S. had supplies and relief to the Sri Lanka victims quicker than we had the same for the Katrina victims). It was cool to see him up close. He's a pretty smooth dude. Other than that, not much to report. Just not-so-patiently waiting for spring to arrive. Our photog staff took second place for N.P.P.A. Station of the Year and one of our photogs won Photog of the Year so that was cool. I didn't get in on the playoff fantasy pool 'cause I was too busy this week. Oh well.

Cool man. Spike is the man. I had a chance to meet him once in Green Bay back in 97. He was at a Packer game shooting some footage of Reggie White. At half time he was in the media food gym having a bratwurst, which just made him more cool to me, when I was going to go over and talk to him but I didn't. I just couldn't push up the courage to go and talk to him. I just could not think of what this white guy in Wisconsin could say to him without looking like an idiot fan. I respect his work too much. Also I did not want to take the chance that he was an a-hole and ruin my vision of him.

His doc about New Orleans is great. If you have a chance to see it do it. When the Levees Broke is what it is called. Worth every minute of the 4 or 5 hours long it is. It was on HBO.

Robby also mentioned that this is his favorite time of the year. Yup, mine too. It is the time of the year when the snow melts (and then it snows again here in Edmonton), the leaves grow back, the temps get higher, AND the hockey is for real. That's right, NHL playoffs. Whooooooooo!

Enjoy the most wonderful time of the year (NHL Playoffs) and say hi to the fam for me. Peace, robby.

I am not going to be chasing any of the games this year, at least not yet, so I get to watch more on the tube. I have actually joined a few playoff pools and I am actually going to give you my choices for the winners this year. It may not be the way it will go but this is the way I WANT it to go....

IN THE EAST

Buffalo Sabres vs NY Islanders

As much as I would like Ryan Smyth to win the cup and come back and drive it up and down Jasper avenue, they just don't have the firepower to beat Buffalo. Buffalo in 5.

New Jersey Devils vs Tampa Bay Lightning

I like the skill that TB has but I don't think they have the goaltending to beat Brodeur. I hate NJ, I hate NJ, I hate NJ, but they are going to win this one. Devils in 6.

Atlanta Thrashers vs New York Rangers

Atlanta has one of my favorite players of all time, Tkachuk, so I would like to see them win this one. Hauser is a big Ranger fan so I have to consider them. Jagr can go away as far as I am concerned. So I am going to pick Atlanta, even though I think the Rangers are going to win. Atlanta in 7. Sorry Hauser.

Ottowa Senators vs Pittsburgh Penguins

As I write this I am watching this game. This one is a toss up. Mitch Davis, of the my brother in law Regina Davis', is a huge Sens fan and Tom Preissing, of the TundraTalk and Green Bay Gamblers Pressings', is on the Senators. They are due, but, Sid the Kid is an amazing hockey player that could just rise up and get it done. I am going with the Senators in 5. Gotta go with my boy Preissing. He gave me one of his sticks last year during the playoffs (he was with the Sharks). That was awesome.

IN THE WESTERN CONFERENCE

Detroit Red Wings vs Calgary Flames

Okay, this one is the battle of the teams I hate with a passion. Doroshenko, of the Pilsner Beer Doroshenkos, is a Wings fan as is Preacher man. The Flames just all around suck the big one. They should not even be in this series, losing 5 of their last 6 games of the season. The Avalanche should be the team knocking the Wings out in the first round again. One lousy point. I can blame that one point on Roloson here in Edmonton. I will not be too mad at him because he is a Packer fan. Anyway, since I think the Flames will be lucky to win one of these games I am forced to say something that I should not have to, the Wings will win. Red Wings in 5. They both suck I just hope for injuries. Kinda like watching a game between the viqueens and the Bears, hope that the stadium just caves in on them, and all their fans.

Anaheim Ducks vs Minnesota Wild

We all know what happened last year with the Chris Pronger saga. I guess you can figure who I am rooting for in this one. Wait, Chris, you are rooting for a team from Minnesota? That is against your religion. I will just explain that when the North Stars left Minnesota back in the day, I lost the only team I would EVER cheer for. That is when I switched my loyalties to Colorado. Therfore when the Wild started up I kinda have a soft spot in my heart for them. Also Derek Boogard is a monster that I could watch play, or fight, 24/7. That dude is awesome. Not to mention he is a great guy. His brother watches Hockey Fights Dot Com
to scout his potential opponents in future games and then sends him a scouting report to read. Nice. Obviously this series is already two games in with Anaheim in the lead 2-0 but I don't care. Homer series with Minnesota stealing one in Anaheim, Minnesota in 7.

Dallas Stars vs Vancouver Canucks

You can refer to the analysis of the last series to know that I HATE DALLAS. When they left Minnesota it hurt. That is all I have to say,
Vancouver in 6.

Nashville Predators vs San Jose Sharks

I am not sure about this one, but I will go with the team that has a former Avalanche on it. Peter Forsberg is on the Preds and I know that dude is money in the playoffs. Look it up, I am not wrong. The Sharks have a lot of skill but I think the Preds are due. Plus maybe my boy Venckus, of the Nash Vegas Venckus', will score some playoff duckets and get to a game.
Predators in 7.

That is it for now. I will give my predictions for the second round after I am wrong in the first.

I also found this on Preacher's blog. Funny things about Wisconsinites. Very funny...

Here is another scene in the "Critically acclaimed" screenplay "A Nice Little Disaster"

EXT. GREAT FORKS -- MORNING
Tony drives up to the Armory just about 0400 in his Chevy 4x4 pickup with Raoul on the passenger seat. He has his National Guard uniform on. There are bunches of troops about and a lot of people running around trying to coordinate bodies to the right parts of town. The weather is gloomy and cold, but holding. Tony gets out of his truck and is greeted by a few troops with salutes and handshakes.

PRIVATE SNYDER
Good morning lieutenant. I see they wrangled you in on this one.

TONY

No, actually, I am just on vacation and thought I would go somewhere with a lot of sand and water.

PRIVATE SNYDER

The General is inside waiting for you.

TONY

Already, I'm an hour early.

PRIVATE SNYDER

Yeah, but to the General you are already...
Both say in unison.

TONY & PRIVATE SNYDER

An hour late.

TONY

Yeah I know. Talk to ya' later Snyder.

PRIVATE SNYDER

Good luck.

Tony walks inside the armory and is greeted by several city officials. At the end of a long table strewn with phones and paperwork the General is looking at a large map of the area. BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK is a large man with a short flat-top haircut. He is very intimidating, very boisterous. He is chewing on an uncut, unlit cigar. Also looking at the map was the Mayor of Great Forks, The Mayor of East Great Forks, and the Governor.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

Good Morning...

The General looks at his watch. And smirks at Tony.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

You are right on time.

Gestures to the city officials around him.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

Lieutenant I'd like you to meet the Mayor of Great Forks Owen Patricks, the Mayor of East Great Forks Linda Strauss, and I believe you know the Governor.

TONY

Good morning, sir.

Pointing to the cigar.

TONY

(smirking)
Still trying to quit?

To the Governor.

TONY

How's it going Governor. Just like old times. Huh?

GOVERNOR TED SNYDER

Yeah, except we are dealing with water instead of a blizzard. When did you thaw out?

TONY

My ass just thawed last week. Uh.. Sir.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

At ease Lieutenant, we have a situation that you need to take care of.

MAYOR OWEN PATRICKS

The Red River has already taken Caldonia and a few other unincorporated villages. It is scheduled to crest at twenty five feet in three days. That is good news and bad news.

TONY

Tell me the good news first.

MAYOR OWEN PATRICKS

The good news is that we have enough sand and bags for twenty seven feet of dike.

TONY

The bad news.

GOVERNOR TED SNYDER

It should take about 4 days to do it.

MAYOR LINDA STRAUSS

Plus the dike was built in 1958. Who knows if it will hold.

TONY

What are the weather forecasts calling for?

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

Well, if you believe in their witchcraft, they are calling for a 50 percent chance of rain in the next 48 hours.

TONY

Which means it will rain sideways. Where are the hot spots?

MAYOR OWEN PATRICKS

What do you mean?

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

He means where are the spots that are susceptible to having a new swimming pool in their front yard.

MAYOR OWEN PATRICKS

Sorry, I am not used to the fancy codes.

Tony shoots a glance at the General and shrugs his shoulders at this remark then the mayor leads them over to the large map of Great Forks.

MAYOR OWEN PATRICKS

Right now to our best predictions the Lincoln Park, the downtown core, and the University would take the brunt of the river in a worst case scenario.

TONY

What is your next move?

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

Your next move is to get out and get the troops ready for an emergency sand bag program if need be.

MAYOR LINDA STRAUSS

Excuse me if I am wrong sir, but the guard is not really meant to be used in that capacity. Aren't they meant to keep law and order.

GOVERNOR TED SNYDER

I will excuse you Mayor, and I will expect you to go out and tell all the people of Great Forks that the Guard is here not to help them in
their gravest hour of need but to keep them in order.

MAYOR LINDA STRAUSS
No disrespect sir...

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

None taken mayor but I think in this case the Guard's definition of capacity will be changed.

Private Snyder walks in to the room and interrupts.

PRIVATE SNYDER

General. You are needed at the barracks.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

I will be there in a second.

PRIVATE SNYDER

Yes sir.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

Also, Mutz, I will need you to be in charge of the media relations.

TONY

That shouldn't be hard, there is what? Two TV stations in town, and 3 radio?

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

For now. Also, I will assign you a driver.

TONY

Sir, if it is all right I would like to get my own.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

Is there something wrong with my choice?

TONY

No sir. I just need someone I can trust.

BRIG GENERAL JIM HANK

Fine. Do whatever you need to do. If the armory paper pushers give you any grief just let them know that I okayed it.

TONY

Yes sir.

Tony salutes the General and he leaves the room. Tony smirks and grabs his cell-phone.

Tom Preissing on Sportsnet and a lot of video to waste your time at work...

tom preissing

As you may remember from an old episode of TundraTalk, the Podcast that does not suck, Tom Preissing, formerly of the Green Bay Gamblers currently playing with the Ottowa Senators, sat down and gave us the answers we wanted to hear. Go back and listen to episode seven of TundraTalk, the podcast that does not suck, and do a bit of remembering.

Okay, now that you have that out of the way, we can move on. Tom recently was on Sportsnet, not the network that I work for, in a story that took him out to the local mall in Ottowa to see if anyone recognizes him. He is leading the league in +/- so they called it the 'Tom Preissing Plus Minus test'. This story is very funny and good on Tom for playing along. Have a look...

Preissing on Vimeo

My personal belief is that a lot more people would know who he is if he was a Canadain born hockey player rather than American. Up here they track all of their future stars from birth to death. It is hard for a Canadian hockey star to go anywhere without being recognized. That is why no one knew him. It probably would be the same in the states because no one cares about hockey. He was traded to Ottowa this year from San Jose so I imagine he could go anywhere in SJ and not be bothered.

Tom is a good kid and a great hockey player that recently has been rumoured to maybe coming to Edmonton via trade. How great would that be having two former Green Bay Gamblers on the same team. Kinda like last year with Greene and Conklin. Then in the playoffs we had Greene, Conklin, and Preissing all on the ice in an NHL game at once. That was historic.

CLICK HERE to read a good story on Tom.

NEXT: As I was at the game on Saturday I was informed that an interview that I shot ended up on YouTube. Funny how that stuff gets up there. It was when Pronger came back to Edmonton with Anaheim earlier in the season. Ilya Bryzgalov ranted about the weather and the fact that he thinks Pronger is a quote 'Good Guy'. His voice goes all high and it is hilarious. Have a look...

Also as I was on YouTube I ran accross these 'Knob Hockey' videos. About the funniest thing I have seen in recent memory. These guys shot their old slide hockey games and added sound of the players and stuff over the top of the game. They all are timed around the playoffs last year and relate to them. The first one is Bryzglov 'Behind the mask'. Have a look. This one will kill ya...

The next one is kind of mean spirited. It involves TundraTalk vetran and former Green Bay Gambler Ty Conlkin. Very mean, but very funny...

The next one also mentions Ty but stars Ryan Smyth doing a pre game pep talk in the locker room prior to game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. Notice the ripped up head on Ryan represents how beat up he got during the series last year. This one will make soda come out your nose or spit it on your screen....

There are about 4 or 5 more up there for your parusing. Just log on to YouTube then search 'Knob Hockey'. The Fernando Pisani one is great and one about Rod Brind'amor being really ugly. Braveheart speech. If you do not want any part of YouTube CLICK HERE to go to the Knob Hockey site.

This last piece of video I have for you is a hockey fight involving George Laraque and some dude who does not really matter. It is about a month old but a good fight. The reason why I am posting it is because they had George Mic'd up. You get to hear what they say before they go. George wishes him luck. Classic. Most of the time when they mic a guy up they get lame audio, not this time. One of the best things that has ever been caught on a mic'd up segment.

NEXT: Also have a look at Megan Venner, of the East coast of Canada Venner's, blog. There is a link to the right. She is a working at home mom writing freelance. I think she is going to also right a best selling novel. I know the topic, it will be about how to work with as a reporter and keep your camera man happy. It will have chapters on how to get to press conferences early so the cameraman can eat all the free food he wants. You know good stuff like that. Now that I think about it, the way to keep a cameraman happy is basically keep him fed. Oh well, that will be a short book.

Have a great week.
