McKenna's First NHL game...

PICT0411

Last night I had the opportunity to take McKenna to her first NHL hockey game. The Oilers played my favorite team the Avalanche. Of course any kid of mine is going to take a sign to the game. She worked out what she wanted to say on the sign and drew it up that morning. Of course she took the advise of the greatest sign maker on the planet. Sign Boy...

Her favorite player is number 15 Joffrey Lupul so she decided on 'Joffrey Lupul Rules'. With a flipside of 'Go Oilers Go'. Nice choice.

McKenna had been talking about this night for a long time. She was totally excited so we went early and she ran some of the energy off in the concourse. She got lots of attention from all the people who work in the rink who know me. She of course loves attention, just like her old man. We got a rink hot dog to curb the munchies and then cruised over for warm ups.

Then it was time for warm ups. We went down to the glass for warmups so she could show off her sign. She was determined that Joffrey would see her sign. Sure enough he did and he flipped her a practice puck over the glass. Nice work McKenna. When Sign Boy used to go for warmups with his signs the only pucks he got were not flipped, they were shot AT him.

We then went into the gold club and stood by the locker room as the players walked back to the room. She then held up the sign again and yelled Go Oilers as loud as she could. She is going to be a great heckler I can tell.

After that I was informed that we NEEDED popcorn, so we went and got some corn then found our seats. Which I might add were given to me by Don Metz. Don is the king of video production here in Edmonton. He even produced Gretzky's wedding. Good work if you can get it. Here is the view from our seats...

The show started and we sang both anthems loud as we could. Then the game, which to her was a bit anticlimactic, but we had fun. Joffrey Lupul scored the first goal about two minutes in. She went nuts. After that she grabbed her pom pons and cheered. Guess what? She made the score board.

Scoreboard

I have been to about a billion hockey games and have made the scoreboard, maybe once. She goes to her first and blamo, front and center. I guess it helps that she is cute. Oh and her dad knows every cameraman in the building.

About midway thru the second she got real bored so I called Donna and she came to pick her up. It was way past her bedtime so when she hits the wall she really hits the wall. I did not want to risk a tantrum at the rink. While we were waiting under the bleachers for Donna McKenna had the opportunity to see the Avalanche walk by and then meet Assistant coach the Avs, and TundraTalk vetran, Tony Granato. Nice. McKenna is a mover and a shaker.

She had a great time and so did I. This is a memory that I will always cherish and I will look forward to going to a game with Dakota.
